An installation for Day of the Dead by Carmen Lomas Garza

Chicana artist Carmen Lomas Garza talks about her ´Homenaje a Tenochtitlan´ (Homage to Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital and current site of Mexico City) as it is being created for the Smith College Art Museum for the 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's voyage to America.

"Specially recommended for K7-12, colleges and libaries with an interest in Chicano art." Roxann Bustos, Library Journal

"Lomas Garza explains the symbolism in the ofrenda, based on the traditional Mexican altar offerings on the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). With a group of college students, she mixes traditional and contemporary art materials, such as cut tissue paper in the Mexican tradition, to create a highly colorful work of art that pays tribute both to her own ancertors and mentors and also to the cultures destroyed by the invasion of the conquistadors."
